JAPAN RAGS

Spring – Summer 2012

Japan Rags: secondhand fashion in high colour

For summer 2012, Japan Rags is offering three lines: Heritage, inspired by secondhand clothing and designed for jeans purists; Rags, a sportier, more colourful line; and Vintage, a more urban look with a healthy dose of black & white.

The Heritage line reinterprets the best secondhand pieces: the universal denim vest, faded and with intentionally worn seams, and speckled crew-neck fleece sweats in pre-aged colours. Checks reign supreme on shirts with long or short sleeves in tones of blue, green and red that pair easily with a raw-denim jacket. Workwear becomes fashion wear and trousers are oversized and belted, while jackets are slightly tighter-fitting.

Rags, the sporty line, reworks American college campus styles with an explosion of colour and an array of vintage prints. Royal blue, apple green and bright red polo shirts rub shoulders with tone-on-tone hooded sweats that reflect the codes inherent to the brand, including brushed fleece with cracked printing and labels discreetly placed on the side. The mainstay of the season is the red and white varsity jacket, to be worn with checked Bermuda shorts for an overall preppy look.

Japan Rags is also launching its first line of surfing shorts in bright solid colours: blue, red, green and more.

It’s a “hunting and fishing” style for a small line comprising some 10 khaki pieces, featuring multi-pocket fatigues and cotton canvas trousers in stone and ecru tones.

The Vintage line is the quintessential urban line. Black & white is paired with electric blue and soft grey. The blazer ventures into fleece and raw denim, discreetly embroidered and worn over a short-sleeved navy blue polo shirt lined with white on the collar and sleeves. The electric blue cardigan with camel pocket stitching combines quite naturally with faded or raw-denim slim jeans. The jeans are made from cotton canvas, creating a new hybrid that is the perfect balance between cargo pants and jeans. Skulls appear on a white slubbed-cotton T-shirt, while denim shirts are ultra faded for a soft feel and chic look.

Three lines for three different styles.

Denim trends

This season, the urban men setting off to conquer new experiences will try out the hybrid trouser, a perfect balance between the cut of chinos and the feel of denim. There was only one step to take, and we took it – the chino in denim: faded or raw, light-blue and in a shorts version. A skull appears in the corner of the front pocket. Bermuda shorts take a whole new form in soft, ripped, bleached denim. And white becomes man’s newfound friend – but a white revised in shades of gray for a unique look and a fine compromise to counter white’s inconveniences.

In terms of cut, men return to the roots of denim for an authentic, casual product. The Heritage line meets this demand: authentic in terms of the fadings available and the details on every model, while remaining casual in cut. The jeans of summer 2012 equal comfort: slightly loose and rolled at the ankle for a chic, pseudo-prep effect. The slim jean is available in soft denim, raw denim, black or grey in the Vintage line for the urban man of the business district.

Japan Rags continues its rise in sustainable development and holds the monopoly on jeans faded without water: this season, it is offering some 20 models created with this innovative, revolutionary technology.
